depends on if you want it for a day or for months. For a day...my sister and I use to take brown paper bags and tear them into one inch strips. we would part off our hair and wrap our hair tightly in the strips like you would a curling iron. This would be done before bed time to wet hair. In the morning it would be dry and we would have that look. Now I just go have a perm put in. Tell the stylist the look you want and they can help you

To get loose, beachy waves (I have fairly straight hair, too), I take a shower, use a liiiiittle conditioner on my ends (no where else... it'll weigh your hair down), rinse, towel dry, comb it out, spray in this John Frieda Curl-Enhancing Spray, and then I put my hair in either one braid, or two braids (like pig tails) and then let it dry. When you undo the braids (when they're dry), your hair will be in loose waves. That's what works for me. Try it out.
